Is the India-US Trade Deal a Major Step Forward?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) Israel's Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, expressed his enthusiastic support for the India-US trade deal on Friday, describing it as a significant milestone that will enhance economic collaboration.
In a special interview with IANS, Azar commented, "Israel is deeply integrated with the American market, receiving approximately 80 percent of our foreign investments from the United States. Moreover, Israel stands as the largest innovation hub outside the US."
"With the system's opening, there will be increased chances for Israeli, Indian, and US companies to collaborate," he further stated.
India and Israel have already formalized the terms of reference that will steer negotiations towards a balanced, comprehensive free trade agreement.
In November 2025, India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Israel’s Economy Minister Nir Barkat signed the terms of reference in Tel Aviv, officially initiating discussions for a comprehensive pact aimed at enhancing trade, investment, and cooperation in technology, defense, and agriculture.
Negotiations will continue as both countries advance on this crucial matter.
Additionally, India and Israel signed a joint ministerial declaration in January this year to boost bilateral cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture, acknowledging Israel's cutting-edge technologies and India's abundant aquatic resources. This agreement was reached during the visit of a high-level Indian delegation, led by Union Fisheries Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, from January 13 to 15, 2026, for the second global summit on "Blue Food Security: Sea the Future 2026" held at Eilat, Israel.
The joint declaration outlines a comprehensive framework for collaboration in various sectors of mutual interest.
Key areas of partnership include joint R&D in advanced aquaculture technologies such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), biofloc, cage culture, aquaponics, and aquarium systems, including oceanarium expertise in breeding high-yield species.
Furthermore, it encompasses pathogen-free seed improvement strategies and broodstock development.
A crucial aspect of this collaboration will be exploring the establishment of new India-Israel Centres of Excellence for fisheries and aquaculture, akin to the successful network of 43 agricultural Centres of Excellence already functioning under India-Israel partnership.
