New Delhi, Sep 11 (NationPress) The Central government announced on Thursday it is prepared to operate additional parcel trains should there be an increased demand from Kashmir apple growers. This announcement coincides with the launch of the inaugural parcel train service connecting the Valley with Delhi, set to commence on September 13.
The Ministry of Railways stated that two Parcel Van (LVPH coaches) have been designated for transporting apples.
“These parcel vans will be loaded today, with each capable of holding 23 metric tonnes (MT) of apples. Indian Railways stands ready to provide extra parcel vans if the demand arises,” it added.
In response to the needs of fruit producers in the Kashmir Valley to ship their harvest to prominent markets in Delhi, Indian Railways has proactively initiated this service.
As per the official announcement, the Principal Chief Commercial Manager of Northern Railway, along with the Divisional Railway Manager of Jammu Division, are actively liaising with state officials, the horticulture department, fruit growers’ associations, and traders.
“With the onset of the principal apple season, Indian Railways is commencing a daily time-tabled parcel train between Badgam (in the Kashmir Valley) and Adarsh Nagar (in New Delhi) starting from September 13. This train will afford individual traders and fruit growers the convenience to reserve a parcel van online via the portal,” stated the ministry.
The service will feature a train with eight parcel vans departing from Badgam Railway Station (BDGM) at 6.15 a.m. and arriving at Adarsh Nagar Railway Station (ANDI) at 5.00 a.m. the following day, which is ideal for the timely arrival of apples in the Delhi market.
Additionally, Indian Railways is facilitating the attachment of parcel vans at intermediate stations.
“We are prepared to operate more such trains if further demand is received,” it confirmed.
On August 9, the first freight train carrying 21 wagons of cement successfully arrived at the Anantnag Goods Shed in the Kashmir Valley from Punjab, marking a significant milestone in enhancing regional connectivity to the national freight network.
This initiative is expected to expedite infrastructure projects across Kashmir and alleviate costs for residents in the region, showcasing Indian Railways' dedication to fostering economic development in the area, as highlighted by the government.
The freight service is now operational on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June this year.
Earlier today, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed the launch of a parcel train service from Budgam in Kashmir to Adarsh Nagar railway station in Delhi.
He tweeted on X, “Empowering Kashmir’s apple growers. With the Jammu-Srinagar line operational, the Kashmir valley enjoys improved connectivity. Railways is set to introduce a daily time-tabled parcel train from Badgam to Adarsh Nagar station in Delhi starting September 13, 2025. The loading of two parcel vans filled with apples from Badgam to Delhi begins today.”
