India’s Coal Reserves Adequate, Ensures Power Supply Amid West Asia Challenges
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) The government announced on Wednesday that India has an ample supply of coal in its mines, ensuring that there is enough fuel to satisfy the demands of power generation.
During a briefing involving multiple ministries regarding recent events in West Asia, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, Sanjeev Kumar Kassi, emphasized that the government has instructed coal companies to maintain a steady supply amidst global uncertainties.
The ministry has provided direction to coal producers to stabilize supplies even as input costs rise, Kassi explained.
Focusing on affordability, Coal India Limited and the Singareni Collieries Company Limited have absorbed increased costs, ensuring that consumers do not face this financial burden.
To facilitate better access to coal for buyers, Coal India has also ramped up the frequency of e-auctions as of March, with Kassi noting that domestic coal availability remains satisfactory.
Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, recently stated that coal gasification will play a crucial role in enhancing India’s energy security, decreasing reliance on imports, and fostering industrial growth.
He described coal gasification as a transformative technology that converts coal into syngas, which can be utilized to produce cleaner fuels, chemicals, fertilizers, and hydrogen. This strategy promotes a more efficient and sustainable use of domestic resources while bolstering economic resilience.
The minister revealed that to encourage this technology's use, the government has initiated the National Coal Gasification Mission, aiming for 100 million tonnes of gasification by 2030.
An incentive package of ₹8,500 crore has been established to support projects in both the public and private sectors, with numerous large-scale initiatives already in progress and investments exceeding ₹64,000 crore anticipated.
Moreover, advanced technologies like Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) were highlighted for their potential to access previously unreachable reserves while minimizing environmental impacts.
He emphasized that India’s rapidly growing economy necessitates a balanced energy strategy that harmonizes development with sustainability.
