Chennai, Oct 26 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu is on the verge of achieving a historic milestone by becoming the initial state in India to launch a free cancer vaccination program for girls aged between one and 14 years, as stated by state Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma. Subramanian during a recent announcement.
While speaking at the 16th annual breast cancer awareness event, titled 'Oru Nadai Oru Nambikkai' (One Step, One Hope), which took place at Island Grounds in Chennai, the Minister disclosed that the state government has allocated Rs 38 crore for this groundbreaking preventive healthcare initiative.
"The tender process has been finalized. Once initiated, Tamil Nadu will become the first state in the nation to offer the cancer-preventive vaccine entirely free for girls in the age range of one to fourteen," the Minister explained, highlighting that this initiative could pave the way for similar projects across the country.
He also stressed the increasing significance of lifestyle choices and physical fitness in cancer prevention.
"Scientific research has demonstrated that individuals who engage in daily walking or running experience a considerably reduced risk of developing cancer. Regular exercise stands out as one of the most effective preventive strategies," he stated.
Furthermore, highlighting Chief Minister M. K. Stalin's unwavering commitment to public health and environmental issues, Subramanian noted that the Chief Minister had inspected the Adyar estuary for the second consecutive day as part of the state's flood preparedness initiatives.
"I personally walked 13 kilometers this morning," he added, reinforcing the event's focus on fitness and awareness.
The Minister also disclosed that six districts in Tamil Nadu have been placed on alert due to reports of a potential global resurgence of polio after a two-decade hiatus.
He mentioned that precautionary vaccination drives are already in progress to maintain immunity and ensure public safety.
"Through such ongoing health initiatives, Tamil Nadu continues to lead India in guaranteeing every citizen's right to a healthy life," Subramanian remarked.
The awareness event attracted over 500 participants, including actress Sanchita Shetty, cancer survivors, students, and volunteers.
