New Delhi, Jan 24 (NationPress) The Indian government has asserted that the nation is making strides towards a society free from gender bias and providing equal opportunities for girls. Established in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), National Girl Child Day acts as a significant platform to enhance awareness about gender inequality, advocate for equal rights, and create an atmosphere where girls can flourish as empowered individuals.

This observance aligns seamlessly with India's commitment to women-led development and the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Through various initiatives, backed by community involvement, NGOs, educational institutions, and Anganwadis, the government has made notable advancements in the survival, education, and empowerment of girls.

“National Girl Child Day 2026 serves as a poignant reminder of the necessity to empower girls and cultivate an environment characterized by equality and opportunity. Through comprehensive awareness campaigns, stringent policy implementation, and community collaboration, India is progressively moving towards gender equity and a shift in societal attitudes,” an official statement revealed.

“With unwavering support from the government, civil society, and communities, India is heading towards a just society where every girl child is esteemed, safeguarded, and enabled to reach her full potential,” it continued.

The government has tackled ongoing disparities confronting girls, including gender prejudices, female foeticide, challenges in the child sex ratio, child marriage, and obstacles to education and healthcare.

Crucially, this day underlines the importance of transforming societal perspectives to appreciate and honor girls as equals, thereby fostering their overall development.

“Remarkable progress has been achieved through persistent efforts, particularly under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative, with the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) increasing from approximately 918 in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24 nationwide,” the government reported.

Moreover, the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) for girls at the secondary level (Classes 9-10) in India has seen an uptick, climbing from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 78% in 2023-24.

Furthermore, the GER for girls at the secondary level reached 80.2% in 2024-25.

The government has introduced a variety of targeted schemes to safeguard, educate, and empower the girl child, many of which fall under the umbrella of Mission Shakti, encompassing Samagra Shiksha, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP).

Other significant programs include the Vigyan Jyoti Scheme, scholarships for girls, the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat, POSHAN Abhiyaan, and Mission Vatsalya.

To ensure long-term financial security and independence for girls, the government has also launched dedicated savings and investment schemes that encourage families to plan for their daughters’ education, marriage, and future requirements through the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY).
