New Delhi, Jan 15 (NationPress) India has established itself as the primary responder for the Global South when it comes to humanitarian efforts during natural disasters, stated Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, on Wednesday.

The nation is actively engaged in disaster management for neighboring countries, focusing on flood prevention, flood control, and the mitigation of various disasters, Goyal mentioned during his speech at the World Congress on Disaster Management, Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDM-DRR) Awards held in the national capital.

He pointed out that during the Covid-19 pandemic, India extended its support by providing free vaccines to more than 100 nations through the Vaccine Maitri humanitarian program.

“The Indian government stands ready to assist every individual in distress, both domestically and globally. This exemplifies true global leadership and reflects India’s core philosophy,” Goyal remarked.

Furthermore, the Minister emphasized the necessity for improvement in disaster relief insurance claims, advocating for greater awareness and prompt resolution of claims without the need for court intervention.

Regarding the responsibilities of all involved parties, he advised victims to avoid making inflated claims, as these can hinder timely processing.

“Accurate and truthful assessments are essential for authorities to expedite disaster relief claims and provide support to those who truly need it,” he added.

Goyal also recognized the sacrifices made by the army, navy, air force, and the Central and State Rapid Action Forces.

He commended the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for their role in disaster prevention and efforts to minimize casualties in recent events.

The integration of the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) with the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) offers significant reassurance to the nation.

Moreover, the recently enacted Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024 is set to benefit the country by establishing a comprehensive database of disasters at both the national and state levels, the Minister added.
