New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) - On Friday, the Ministry of Defence finalized agreements totaling Rs 858 crore for the acquisition of the advanced Russian Tunguska Air Defence Missile System and a maintenance agreement with Boeing for the depot-level inspection of the P8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft of the Indian Navy.
The contracts were signed at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh along with other senior officials.
The deal for the Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems, amounting to Rs 445 crore for the Indian Army, was established with Russia’s JSC Rosoboronexport. These sophisticated missiles will bolster India’s multi-layered air defence framework against various aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. This agreement is expected to enhance the strategic Indo-Russian defence partnership, as stated by the Ministry of Defence.
Additionally, the contract for the Depot Level Inspection of the P8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft for the Indian Navy, which falls under the “Buy Indian” initiative with complete indigenous content, is valued at Rs 413 crore. This was signed with Boeing India Defense Private Ltd, an entirely owned Indian subsidiary of Boeing, with senior Ministry of Defence officials present. This contract guarantees the depot-level maintenance of the P8I fleet at an in-country MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facility, aligning with the government's vision for Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India, as per the official statement.
The Boeing P-8I Poseidon is the Indian Navy’s state-of-the-art, long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft. Often referred to as the guardian of the Indian Ocean, it operates a fleet of 12 units for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as anti-ship operations, with intentions to acquire six additional units to enhance maritime domain awareness and counter regional threats.
The P-8I represents a variant of the US Navy’s P-8A Poseidon, making India its first international customer, thus establishing it as a vital asset within the Indo-Pacific region.
