India's Energy Supply Remains Strong Amid Global Disruptions

Synopsis

The Indian government assures citizens that there are no fuel shortages amidst global energy disruptions. With ample reserves and continuous supply, India is positioned to maintain its energy security without needing emergency measures.

Key Takeaways

India's fuel supply is stable, with no shortages.
Domestic refinery production of LPG has increased significantly.
India possesses a robust reserve capacity of 74 days.
Government measures are in place to prevent hoarding.
Piped Natural Gas is part of India's long-term energy strategy.

New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) The supply of petroleum products and LPG across India is currently stable, with no sign of shortages for petrol, diesel, or LPG. Retail outlets are well-stocked and dispensing fuel continuously, as per government reports.

As the 4th largest refiner and 5th largest exporter of petroleum products globally, India boasts a structurally secure domestic availability, as stated by the Petroleum Ministry.

While several countries are declaring "National Energy Emergencies" or resorting to rationing, India is not in need of such drastic measures.

The government has pointed out a "deliberately misleading" campaign on social media. Instances of crowding at petrol stations were fueled by manipulated videos rather than real shortages. Oil company depots have worked around the clock to ensure that pumps are constantly stocked.

Despite the ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz, India is actually receiving increased crude oil supplies from over 41 international sources compared to pre-disruption levels.

High volumes from the western hemisphere have adequately compensated for any shortfalls, with every Indian refinery currently operating at more than 100% capacity.

Contrary to reports suggesting a mere 6-day stock, India possesses a total reserve capacity of 74 days, with the actual stock cover estimated at about 60 days. This includes crude stocks, product stocks, and strategic storage in caverns.

Crude procurement for the following 60 days has already been arranged, according to the Petroleum Ministry.

Under the LPG Control Order, domestic refinery production has surged by 40%, achieving a daily output of 50 TMT. This meets over 60% of daily needs, significantly lowering the net daily import requirement to just 30 TMT.

In addition to domestic production, 800 TMT of assured LPG shipments are on their way from countries like the U.S., Russia, and Australia. These will reach 22 import terminals—twice the capacity available in 2014—with one full month of supply reliably secured.

Meanwhile, oil companies are distributing over 5 million LPG cylinders daily. Although panic buying temporarily inflated demand to 8.9 million cylinders, it has since stabilized at 5 million. Commercial allocations have been set at 50% to deter hoarding and black market activities.

The promotion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is part of a long-term strategy for cleaner and more affordable energy, not merely a crisis response. Domestic PNG connections have risen from 2.5 million to over 15 million, with city gas distribution now encompassing more than 300 geographical areas.

Additionally, to avoid local shortages due to financial constraints, Oil Companies have extended credit limits for petrol pump owners from one day to over three days, allowing them to maintain optimal stock levels consistently.

The Petroleum Ministry cautions that disseminating false information concerning essential commodities is a criminal offense. Legal action will be pursued against those who exploit fabricated claims of lockdowns or emergencies to incite public panic.

Point of View

The government’s assurances about fuel security reflect a commitment to stability and public confidence. Amidst global challenges, India's energy infrastructure is proving resilient, ensuring citizens are not affected by misinformation or panic.
