March Sees a 16% Surge in India's Passenger Vehicle Sales: Latest Insights
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) - The month of March witnessed a remarkable 16% increase in domestic passenger vehicle shipments to dealers, totaling 442,460 units compared to the same month last year. This surge is attributed to a rise in consumer demand and enhanced inventory levels at dealerships, as per a report released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Tuesday.
In March of the previous year, passenger vehicle wholesales were recorded at 381,358 units.
Additionally, two-wheeler dispatches experienced significant growth, soaring by 19.3% to reach 1,976,128 units in March, as opposed to 1,656,939 units during the same period last year, according to the industry association's statement.
Three-wheeler dispatches also climbed, experiencing a 21.4% year-on-year increase to 76,273 units in March, up from 62,813 units in March 2025.
Furthermore, domestic passenger vehicle dispatches from manufacturers to dealers rose by 10.6% year-on-year to 417,705 units in February, reflecting a persistent positive market atmosphere as cited by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
The overall outlook for the passenger vehicle market remains optimistic, although growth rates are anticipated to stabilize moving forward.
As noted in a previous report, the industry is projected to achieve wholesale volume growth of approximately 7-9% in FY26, bolstered by robust festive demand, recent GST reductions, and a steady stream of new model launches.
However, growth is expected to moderate to 4-6% in FY27 due to a higher comparison base and shifting macroeconomic factors.
Moreover, the report emphasized that the sector is undergoing significant structural transformations, with utility vehicles now constituting nearly 67% of total passenger vehicle sales, underscoring an ongoing trend towards premiumization. The increasing adoption of alternative fuel vehicles, such as CNG and electric vehicles, is also contributing to a diversification in demand.
