New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) The wholesale price index (WPI) inflation in India has risen to 3.88 percent for March, marking an increase compared to the same month last year. This rise is largely attributed to the escalating costs of crude oil, natural gas, and various manufactured goods.

In comparison, the WPI inflation was recorded at 2.13 percent in February of this year.

The WPI food inflation rate held steady at 1.85 percent in March relative to the same month last year.

Month-over-month, the WPI inflation for the fuel and power sector surged by 4.13 percent in March compared to February, driven by a remarkable increase of 36.16 percent in crude oil and gas prices amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This increase was somewhat counterbalanced by a 5.07 percent drop in electricity prices, according to the latest figures.

The Food Index, which includes staples like cereals, pulses, and processed food items, showed a slight decrease in March compared to February.

Moreover, the WPI inflation for manufactured products rose by 0.88 percent over the month, with 16 out of 22 products in this category experiencing price hikes, while six products saw price reductions.

On another note, the nation's inflation rate, as measured by the new Consumer Price Index (CPI), increased to 3.4 percent in March compared to the same month last year, as reported by the Ministry of Statistics.

Among the items that recorded the highest inflation rates this month were silver jewellery, which saw a staggering 148.61 percent price surge, and gold jewellery, which experienced a 45.92 percent increase.

Overall food inflation in March stood at 3.87 percent, primarily due to rising prices of vegetables like tomatoes and cauliflowers. Conversely, prices for onions, potatoes, and garlic witnessed double-digit declines compared to the same month last year, with arhar and tur prices dropping by 9.56 percent, and chickpeas falling by 7.87 percent.

In summary, March's inflation rate was slightly higher than the 3.21 percent recorded in February and the revised 2.74 percent from January this year, following the introduction of the new series.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize that the recent increase in India's WPI inflation reflects broader global economic pressures, particularly in energy markets. While certain commodities see price surges, others are experiencing declines, indicating a complex economic landscape that warrants careful monitoring.
