Government intervention is necessary to protect consumer rights.

New Delhi, Dec 6 (NationPress) Addressing the ongoing cancellations and delays of IndiGo flights, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Rajasthan Assembly and Congress MLA Tika Ram Jully stated on Saturday that the situation is incredibly critical and demands prompt government action.

In a conversation with IANS, Jully remarked, “The circumstances unfolding at airports are extremely alarming. A majority of travelers book flights for urgent matters or fixed timelines, whether for business or personal purposes. It seems as though IndiGo has intentionally orchestrated this crisis to exert pressure on the government, leaving passengers stranded until the government responds.”

The Congress leader further noted, “While the government has mandated longer rest periods for airline staff, further measures are necessary. The sudden fare hike from Rs 7,000-Rs 8,000 to nearly Rs 1 lakh is absolutely unacceptable. People will continue to travel, but that does not grant airlines the liberty to take advantage of them.”

Jully also accused other airlines of following suit with fare increases.

“After the Pahalgam incident, many airlines raised prices. Regardless of the situation, government intervention is required,” he asserted.

In the meantime, IndiGo has canceled a total of 405 domestic flights as the significant crisis affecting the airline stretched into its fifth day on Saturday. However, Indian Railways stepped in to assist the distressed passengers, adding extra coaches to its trains to accommodate the influx of travelers.

With an operational capacity of 2,300 flights daily and a fleet of over 400 aircraft, IndiGo's punctuality has sharply declined due to ongoing operational challenges expected to continue for several more days.

The core issue of the current crisis stems primarily from an unforeseen pilot shortage due to inadequate planning, with authorities closely monitoring the developments.

Scenes of utter chaos have been reported at airports across the nation, as IndiGo's domestic passengers expressed their frustration over the delays and cancellations of their flights.

Amid a surge in passenger demand due to widespread IndiGo flight cancellations, Indian Railways has deployed 116 additional coaches across 37 premium trains, facilitating 114 enhanced trips nationwide.

The Railway Ministry stated in a press release that Southern Railway recorded the highest number of augmentations, increasing capacity on 18 trains.

“Additional Chair Car and Sleeper Class coaches have been added on routes with high demand. These enhancements, effective from December 6, 2025, significantly boost accommodation capacity in the southern region,” the ministry reported.

“Northern Railway (NR) follows with enhancements on eight trains, adding 3AC and Chair Car coaches. These measures implemented from today improve availability on heavily trafficked northern corridors,” the statement added.

Point of View

It is imperative to note the broader implications of such operational failures. This situation not only affects thousands of travelers but also raises questions about regulatory oversight within the aviation sector. The government must act decisively to ensure that consumer rights are protected and that such disruptions are addressed effectively.
