Mumbai, Jan 15 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially commissioned three advanced naval combat vessels — INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer — during a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in the city.
In his address, PM Modi noted that January 15, recognized as Army Day, pays tribute to every courageous soldier who sacrifices their life for the nation's safety and security.
INS Surat, the final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, is among the largest and most advanced destroyers globally. With an impressive 75 percent indigenous content, it boasts cutting-edge weapon and sensor systems alongside advanced network-centric capabilities.
The warship’s motto, ‘We dare’, embodies the fearless essence of INS Surat, highlighting its readiness to tackle challenges with unwavering determination.
On this historic day, the ship’s captain and commanding officers expressed their views to IANS, praising INS Surat as a ‘top-tier destroyer’.
Captain Sandeep Shorey referred to the vessel as a comprehensive solution for all scenarios, assuring that it would fulfill its missions with utmost precision once operational.
He emphasized the national pride stemming from its indigenously constructed components, exceeding 75 percent homegrown technology.
“The integration of AI-enabled systems equips INS Surat with a significant advantage, and its rapid commissioning is commendable,” he added.
Lieutenant Commander Arpit Sangwan, responsible for signal communications, described INS Surat as the ‘latest destroyer’.
He noted, “Given the current geopolitical tensions, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the importance of jammers and electronic warfare has surged. This will ensure uninterrupted communication between our units and establishments at all times.”
Lieutenant Commander Mayank Bhalla, overseeing the gunnery sections, stated that the ship is equipped with a comprehensive array of missile systems, including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air capabilities.
The vessel features numerous state-of-the-art technologies, such as indigenous 76 MM super rapid gun mounts and AK 630 close-in weapon systems. Additionally, it can house two multirole helicopters in its enclosed hangar and flight deck, enabling operations around the clock. The ship’s powerful generators offer a capacity of 4.6 MW.
