Mumbai, Jan 15 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday dedicated three frontline naval combatants INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer to the nation following their commissioning at the Naval Dockyard.
“The commissioning of three frontline naval combatants will strengthen our efforts towards being a global leader in defence and augment our quest towards self-reliance,” stated the Prime Minister.
He emphasized that the commissioning of these vessels highlights India's unwavering commitment to developing a robust and self-reliant defence sector.
Prominent figures such as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar were present at the event.
As per the government release, the commissioning of the three significant naval combatants signifies a major advancement towards realizing India’s ambition of becoming a global leader in defence manufacturing and ensuring maritime security. These ships were constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders as a tribute to Atmanirbhar Bharat, collectively representing a credible, cohesive, future-ready, and combat-ready force.
INS Surat, the fourth and final vessel of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, is among the largest and most advanced destroyers globally. With an indigenous content of 75 percent, it boasts state-of-the-art weapon-sensor packages and cutting-edge network-centric capabilities.
INS Surat possesses enhanced features compared to earlier classes, showcasing improved design and advanced weapon systems, alongside support for various helicopter operations.
INS Nilgiri, the inaugural ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, has been crafted by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and integrates advanced characteristics for better survivability, seakeeping, and stealth, epitomizing the next generation of indigenous frigates. It includes advanced stealth technologies and minimized radar signatures, designed for multi-role operations with modern aviation facilities.
INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and last submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, showcases India’s increasing proficiency in submarine construction, developed in partnership with the Naval Group of France. This Scorpene-class submarine is recognized for its stealth and adaptability in missions, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, equipped with advanced sonar and missile systems.
