Bhopal, Sep 4 (NationPress) Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state Assembly, Umang Singhar, accused the Mohan Yadav-led Madhya Pradesh government of "shielding" BJP leaders who are closely associated with Bhopal's Machhli family.
During a press conference, Singh refrained from naming any BJP leader but presented a series of photographs depicting the state's sports minister, Vishwas Sarang, alongside Sharik Machhli, the principal suspect in a drug trafficking and money laundering operation.
Singhar remarked that several drug networks have been revealed in Madhya Pradesh over the past few months, with each instance uncovering ties to senior BJP leaders, yet the government has remained conspicuously silent.
"From the outset, when Bhopal police exposed the Machhli family's drug connections, a BJP leader's involvement was also revealed, yet Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and the BJP have chosen to ignore it. What is preventing him (CM) from acting against the BJP leader?" Singhar questioned.
In addition, the state Congress released multiple videos and images showing Vishwas Sarang riding high-end motorcycles with Sharik Machhli on the pillion seat.
Other photos depicted Sarang socializing with the Machhli family during various events.
"These images undeniably illustrate the BJP leader's connection to them. Does this imply that the BJP is providing cover for such mafias and drug traffickers who are leading our youth into addiction?" the Congress leader challenged.
In recent weeks, nearly a dozen members of the extended Machhli family have faced charges, with numerous arrests already executed. The Bhopal Crime Branch is overseeing the investigation.
On August 21, the Bhopal district administration demolished a luxurious bungalow owned by the Machhli family due to illegal construction on government land. In recent weeks, multiple properties and encroached lands associated with the family have also been confiscated.
This crackdown follows the July detainments of Shahwar Machhli and his nephew Yasin Machhli, both accused of key roles in a drug syndicate reportedly operating throughout Madhya Pradesh.
Over time, the family has allegedly forged connections with local politicians and influential figures, purportedly shielding their growing illegal activities. Their ventures later diversified into fish farming, illegal mining, land grabbing, and by the late 1990s, narcotics and arms smuggling.
On Wednesday, NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo claimed that an individual who introduced himself as a business associate of the controversial Machhli family approached him at his home in New Delhi, later arrested by Delhi police.
It is important to note that an investigation into the Machhli family commenced following a complaint filed by Priyank Kanoongo, alleging that the family was involved in various illicit activities, including drug trafficking, money laundering, and potential coercive religious conversions.
Numerous acres of land allegedly encroached by the Machhli family in Bhopal have been reclaimed, and several properties valued in crores have been recovered. The investigation, conducted by Bhopal police's crime branch, remains ongoing.
