Jaishankar Affirms Support from Modi Government at PBD Convention

Bhubaneswar, Jan 9 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar emphasized that organizing the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in Odisha symbolizes the Modi government's 'Poorvudaya' policy, showcasing the advancement and significance of eastern India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally launched the 18th PBD Convention on Thursday in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, attended by EAM Jaishankar, Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with other esteemed guests.

The event commenced with an engaging performance by three-time Grammy Award recipient Ricky Kej.

While addressing the attendees, EAM Jaishankar expressed his pride in the accomplishments of the Indian diaspora, stating, "You all not only feel proud of your achievements but also enhance India's global respect."

"In an increasingly globalized world, the diaspora's importance grows every year. Whether it pertains to technology, best practices, or resources, including tourism, trade, or investment, the bilateral exchanges you facilitate are essential. As we pursue creating a global workspace, this will become even more critical in the future,"

he elaborated.

Jaishankar pointed out the "people-centric changes" that have been implemented in India, such as enhancing the ease of doing business, living, and traveling.

He highlighted the application of digital technologies aimed at benefiting the diaspora, including streamlined passport issuance and renewal processes, improved consular services, grievance redressal platforms, and more accountable embassies and consulates.

"Most importantly, during challenging times, rest assured that the Modi government has your back," he asserted.

He praised Odisha for its vast historical and cultural heritage, referencing notable attractions like the Jagannath Temple, Lingaraj Temple, and Konark Temple.

"Hosting this PBD in Odisha is a testament to the Modi government's 'Poorvudaya' Policy. In many respects, Odisha embodies the full richness of our history and culture,"

Jaishankar remarked.

He also drew a connection between the state's famed Bali Yatra and the Indian government's 'Act East' policy. "When we define ourselves as an Indo-Pacific nation, we do so from the eastern sea border of Odisha," he noted.

Jaishankar underscored India's increasing confidence, modernization, and inclusivity, where tradition and technology coexist harmoniously.

He urged the diaspora to participate actively in the mission of creating a "Viksit Bharat."

The PBD Convention, organized by the Central government in partnership with the Odisha state government, is taking place from January 8 to 10. Delegates from over 50 nations have registered for the event, themed "Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat."

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention was first established in 2003 under the guidance of then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a platform to acknowledge and engage with the overseas Indian community. It serves as the flagship event of the Ministry of External Affairs, showcasing the diversity and progress of various regions of India.

Since 2015, the PBD Convention has transformed into a biennial event, with theme-focused conferences held in the intervening years. This approach promotes targeted discussions on specific topics of interest and provides networking opportunities for the global Indian diaspora.
