External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday, 14 August met Jurgen Hardt, the foreign policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in Germany's Bundestag, in New Delhi. The two held wide-ranging discussions covering developments in West Asia, the ongoing Ukraine conflict, and the broader India-Germany Strategic Partnership.

Germany's newly appointed Ambassador to India, Jasper Wieck, was also present at the meeting, signalling the depth of diplomatic engagement between the two nations at this juncture.

75 Years of India-Germany Diplomatic Relations

The meeting comes at a milestone moment: 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Germany, established in 1951 — making India one of the first countries to normalise ties with Germany after the Second World War. The strategic partnership itself is anchored in the Agenda for the Indo-German Partnership in the 21st Century, adopted in May 2000 and subsequently updated through joint declarations including the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement of 2022.

Germany remains one of India's most consequential partners in Europe, with bilateral ties spanning trade, technology, defence cooperation, and people-to-people links.

New German Ambassador Sets His Agenda

Ambassador Jasper Wieck, who has yet to formally present his credentials, has wasted no time signalling his priorities. On Thursday, he said he intends to serve as a 'matchmaker, enabler and catalyst' to elevate Indo-German friendship to a new level.

In a video posted on X, Wieck reflected on a personal connection with India spanning 35 years, beginning with a student visit. He later returned as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in New Delhi. 'For me, coming to India is like coming home. I am an old friend of India. I first came to India 35 years ago. I was still a student, immediately I felt thrilled by the country and its people,' Wieck said in the video.

He also pointed to structural growth drivers in the bilateral relationship, noting that the Indian diaspora in Germany is growing even as German investments in India continue to rise. 'We are building new bridges between our nations every day,' he added.
