The Jal Jeevan Mission, the Central government's flagship rural drinking water programme, has ended decades of water scarcity in Chavariya, a small tribal village in the Thandla block of Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua district. All 79 households in the village now receive clean drinking water through individual tap connections — a transformation that residents say has fundamentally changed daily life.

The Burden Women Used to Carry

Until a few years ago, women and young girls in Chavariya walked several kilometres every day to fetch water from distant sources, spending hours on a task essential to basic survival. The burden fell disproportionately on women, consuming time that could otherwise go toward farming, childcare, and household work.

'Earlier, we had to spend several hours every day fetching water. Now, clean drinking water is available at our doorstep, which has made our lives much easier,' said a woman resident of the village, according to a government statement.

What the Piped Water System Has Changed

With the installation of a piped water supply system under the Jal Jeevan Mission, families in Chavariya now have adequate water for drinking, cooking, and other domestic needs throughout the year. Access to safe water has also improved hygiene and sanitation practices across the settlement, according to officials.

The relief has been particularly significant during summer months, when water scarcity previously caused acute stress for residents. Villagers say the change has reduced that seasonal anxiety and improved overall living conditions in the tribal community.

Livelihood Opportunities Created

Beyond water access, the project has generated local employment. Youth from Chavariya have been engaged in the operation and maintenance of the village water supply system, strengthening community participation in managing the infrastructure and creating livelihood opportunities in an otherwise remote area.

Officials of the Public Health Engineering Department described Chavariya as a model reflecting the broader impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission in remote and tribal regions of Madhya Pradesh.

'The objective of the mission is not only to provide tap water connections but also to improve health, dignity and quality of life in rural areas. The transformation witnessed in Chavariya demonstrates the positive impact of reliable drinking water facilities,' the government said in a statement.
