Jammu & Kashmir Government Sanctions 20% DA for JKSRTC Staff

Jammu, Dec 3 (NationPress) On Tuesday, the Jammu and Kashmir government approved a 20% Dearness Allowance (DA) for the staff of the Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC), set to take effect from August 1, 2024.

According to officials, the Transport Minister Satish Sharma endorsed the DA increase today. The JKSRTC functions as a corporate entity.

The corporation's board of directors had previously sanctioned the DA increment for its workforce on August 16, 2024.

Established shortly after Independence in 1947, JKSRTC was initiated in response to the disruption of transport services, as operators like N.D. Radhakrishnan, Chirag Din & Sons, and Nanda Bus Service faced challenges due to border issues, leading to a collapse in the transport of essential goods and the movement of refugees.

To address this situation, the government formed the Government Transport Undertaking (GTU) on January 5, 1948, starting with a fleet of 50 trucks acquired from General Motor Corporation Bombay.

As the demand for government intervention in passenger transport increased, a fresh fleet of buses was added to the existing GTU.

On September 1, 1976, the GTU was transformed into a corporation under section 3 of the Road Transport Corporation Act of 1950.

Thus, the JKSRTC was born as the successor to the former GTU, aimed at making the fleet more profitable and alleviating the financial burden on the government.

The corporation boasts a fleet of over 1,000 buses, including AC sleeper, semi-sleeper, and regular buses.

Additionally, JKSRTC operates numerous mini-buses specifically designed to assist travelers in the remote mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

JKSRTC buses service major routes across several states, including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Delhi.

Key routes serviced by JKSRTC include Srinagar, Jammu, Katra, Leh, Kargil, and Udhampur, among others.
