Jammu, April 9 (NationPress) The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly faced a tumultuous session on Wednesday, prompting Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to suspend proceedings for three hours. The atmosphere turned chaotic as BJP MLAs expressed their outrage over the dismissal of an adjournment motion concerning unemployment.
Meanwhile, members of the National Conference (NC) pressed on with their demonstrations regarding the Waqf Amendment Act, insisting on a thorough debate.
Despite the continued demands, the Speaker maintained his stance of not permitting discussions on the Waqf Amendment Act, citing the ongoing legal proceedings as the reason.
The uproar began promptly as the House opened for the day, with NC legislators vocally urging the Speaker to permit a discussion on the Waqf legislation.
At the same time, the Speaker dismissed the BJP's request for an adjournment motion regarding unemployment, stating: “I have rejected the adjournment motion as it is not a matter of urgent nature.”
This declaration incited further protests from the BJP members, who accused their NC counterparts of staging a drama. “Yeh Dramabazi Bandh Karo (stop these theatrics),” they chanted.
In the midst of the uproar, NC MLA Nazir Gurezi called upon the Speaker to allow discourse on the Waqf law, arguing it was essential to address the injustices faced by the Muslim community.
“They seek to divide Hindus and Muslims. They should clarify how many jobs they have created for the unemployed youth,” Nazir Gurezi yelled at the BJP MLAs.
As tensions escalated, BJP legislators entered the well of the House, staging a sit-in protest.
The Speaker subsequently adjourned the session until 1 p.m.
Additionally, the Speaker has rejected a no-confidence motion against him, which was introduced by PC leader and MLA Sajad Gani Lone.
The J&K Assembly commenced its 40-day budget session on March 3, with a recess occurring from March 26 to April 6.
