Srinagar, Sep 6 (NationPress) The Patiala House Court in Delhi granted permission on Saturday for Engineer Rashid, the Lok Sabha representative from Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla constituency, to cast his vote in the upcoming Vice Presidential election while he remains in custody. Rashid is currently held in Tihar Jail in connection with a terror funding case.
The court has ruled that Engineer Rashid will be escorted to Parliament under police custody to exercise his voting rights on September 9.
While the court stipulated that Rashid must cover the expenses associated with his transportation to Parliament to vote, he is not required to pay this amount immediately. He must submit an affidavit regarding these expenses.
Payment for these costs will be determined after the Delhi High Court makes a ruling on an application he filed concerning travel expenses, which is currently under consideration.
During his time in Tihar Jail, Engineer Rashid contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Baramulla and secured victory over Omar Abdullah, the vice president of the National Conference and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, winning by a margin exceeding two lakh votes.
Inspired by the positive response from voters, Engineer Rashid ran candidates for his party in several regions for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.
His Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) nominated candidates for more than 20 Assembly seats but managed to win just one seat in the Langate assembly constituency, which Rashid has previously represented twice.
Additionally, his brother was elected to the 90-member legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, making him the sole AIP representative.
Previously, Engineer Rashid was granted interim bail due to his parents' deteriorating health and campaigned for AIP candidates during that period.
After his bail expired, he reported back to Tihar Jail and has been incarcerated since. He was later granted custodial bail to take the oath as a Lok Sabha member.
