Hyderabad Seals Late CM Jayalalithaa's House Over Tax Dues
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 31 (NationPress) On Tuesday, municipal officials in Hyderabad took action by sealing the residence of the late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa, due to outstanding property tax payments. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) locked down the G+4 property located in Srinagar Colony, which falls under circle 38 in the Yousufguda locality.
The property, identified as house number 8-3-1099/A, is officially registered in the name of Jayalalithaa. This action was prompted by property tax dues that have accumulated to over Rs.82 lakh, with these arrears building up since 2017.
Last month, Deputy Commissioner Suresh sent notices to the parties connected with the property. However, with no response received, GHMC officials proceeded to seal the premises.
After applying the relevant rebates under the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme, the outstanding tax amounts to Rs 82,91,822. Since the OTS is valid only until March 31, the dues could rise further.
The building was classified under the commercial category due to its use as a private office, resulting in a higher tax burden. Deepak Jayakumar, Jayalalithaa's nephew and a resident of Chennai, had previously reached out to the GHMC to request a change in the property’s classification from commercial to residential, asserting that it has been used for residential purposes since 2017.
Despite these efforts, the municipal authorities sealed the property due to unpaid dues.
It’s noteworthy that Jayalalithaa purchased this building in 1967 for Rs.50,000, with its market value estimated at Rs.5 crore in 2015.
The late Chief Minister had strong ties to Hyderabad, having begun her career in film here and frequently visiting the city over the years. She owned several properties in the region, including a residence in Secunderabad and a farmhouse in Medchal on the outskirts of the city.
