Indore, Jan 16 (NationPress) In a notable political development in Madhya Pradesh, State Congress President Jitu Patwari engaged with seasoned Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan at her residence in Indore on Friday.
Accompanying Patwari was Indore Congress District (Urban) President Chintu Choukse, as they convened for discussions that were captured in photographs shared by the State Congress Media Cell, indicating a constructive dialogue.
Patwari later remarked, "Today, I had the opportunity to visit Sumitra Mahajan (Tai ji) and we addressed the critical issue of contaminated water along with several other significant matters."
It is worth noting that members from various political factions respectfully refer to Mahajan as 'Tai' (elder sister).
Mahajan has been among the BJP leaders who voiced concerns regarding the tragic incident of contaminated water deaths in Indore's Bhagirathpura area.
Former Chief Minister and BJP MP Uma Bharti has also criticized the state government over the Bhagirathpura incident.
On Wednesday, Mahajan characterized the incident as "a wake-up call" for the ruling BJP, expressing that it was a "very painful" situation and highlighting that the BJP has contributed to making Indore the cleanest city in India over the years.
Interestingly, this meeting occurred just a day prior to the visit of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, to Indore's Bhagirathpura. This area has seen more than 15 fatalities and numerous others affected due to the consumption of contaminated water.
The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee has announced that Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Indore around 11 a.m. on Saturday and will visit Bombay Hospital to meet with the patients and their families.
Later that day, he is expected to visit Bhagirathpura to engage with families and patients impacted by the outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea linked to water contamination.
The State Congress unit claims that at least 24 individuals have succumbed to the effects of contaminated water in Bhagirathpura.
Contrarily, the Madhya Pradesh government submitted a recent status report to the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday, indicating that it has compensated the families of 21 individuals who may have died in Indore's Bhagirathpura area, although not all deaths were medically confirmed to be due to water contamination.
