New Delhi, Jan 16 (NationPress) Pakistan Railways is currently grappling with a surge in locomotive failures, primarily attributed to its ageing fleet. Over 63 percent of its engines have been in service for more than two decades, as highlighted in a report from local media.

The report published in the Pakistani daily Dawn is based on insights shared by railway officials during a session with the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Railways on Wednesday.

Officials from the Railway Ministry informed the committee that despite the increasing pressure on rolling stock, several corrective measures are being implemented. These include better maintenance, modernization initiatives, and increased funding aimed at stabilizing operations and enhancing passenger services.

The officials outlined plans for the comprehensive overhauling and modernization of diesel-electric locomotives.

In terms of service quality, the committee examined the issues surrounding non-functional air-conditioning units in passenger coaches, noting that failures have risen due to the age of the AC systems. However, efforts to replace these units are already in progress.

Additionally, the committee learned about the availability of passenger coaches within Pakistan Railways. It was confirmed that the coach shortage experienced since June 2025 has been largely mitigated through improved workshop efficiency and the restoration of coaches that were under repair.

The availability of coaches has risen from 1,016 in September 2025 to 1,105, meeting the demand of 1,100 coaches, with expectations for this number to reach 1,150 by June 2026.

Furthermore, Pakistan Railways reported record passenger earnings of Rs 48.832 billion during the fiscal year 2024-25. Earnings for the first half of the current fiscal year show a 7 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The Secretary of Pakistan Railways provided the committee with an extensive briefing on restructuring and outsourcing measures aimed at boosting efficiency and elevating passenger services.

After the presentation, the committee established a sub-committee to further investigate the issues contributing to the poor performance of the railways.

Point of View

It is crucial to highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Pakistan Railways. The ageing fleet poses serious operational risks, but the proactive measures being introduced are steps in the right direction. Our commitment to delivering reliable services must be unwavering, and we must hold authorities accountable for ensuring improvements.
