New Delhi, May 13 (NationPress) Justice B.R. Gavai is set to take the oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first Buddhist to lead the nation's judiciary.
The oath of office will be administered by President Droupadi Murmu, who appointed Justice Gavai, the senior-most Judge of the Supreme Court, succeeding former CJI Sanjiv Khanna. This appointment was formalized by the Ministry of Law and Justice.
Justice Gavai has served on the Supreme Court since May 24, 2019, during which he participated in approximately 700 Benches that addressed a wide range of legal matters, including constitutional and administrative law, civil law, criminal law, commercial disputes, arbitration law, electricity law, education issues, and environmental law.
He has penned around 300 judgments, including significant Constitution Bench rulings that uphold the rule of law and protect citizens' fundamental and legal rights.
Previously, Justice Gavai served as a permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court starting November 12, 2005, overseeing various types of cases at the Principal Seat in Mumbai as well as in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji.
