New Delhi, Sep 13 (NationPress) The Central Government has officially approved the appointment of Justice M. Sundar as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Union Minister of State (I/C) for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, expressed, “In accordance with the powers granted by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is delighted to appoint Shri Justice M. Sundar, Judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, effective from the day he takes charge, following the retirement of Shri Justice Kempaiah Somashekar on 14.09.25.”
The Supreme Court Collegium convened on Thursday and recommended Justice Sundar (PHC: Madras High Court) for the Chief Justice position in Manipur after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Kempaiah Somashekar, on September 14.
Justice M. Sundar was born on July 19, 1966, in Chennai. He completed his law degree at Madras Law College, being part of its inaugural five-year integrated law course, and was enrolled as an Advocate in 1989.
Prior to his elevation, Justice Sundar mainly practiced at the Madras High Court, dealing with a broad range of civil cases. He also served as the Standing Counsel for the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board from 2003 to 2006 and was sworn in as a permanent Judge of the Madras High Court on October 5, 2016.
The resolution from the Supreme Court Collegium, published on September 11, also noted that Justice Soumen Sen from the Calcutta High Court has been recommended for the Chief Justice position of the Meghalaya High Court, while Justice Pavankumar B. Bajanthri, currently acting as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, has been recommended for regular appointment.
