New Delhi, Jan 12 (NationPress) The Supreme Court Collegium has officially put forward the name of Justice Sujoy Paul, a judge of the Calcutta High Court, for the esteemed position of Chief Justice. Justice Paul has been serving as a judge at the Calcutta High Court since July 18, 2025 and has held the position of Acting Chief Justice since October 2025.
Originally from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, he was transferred to the Telangana High Court in March 2024.
Born on June 21, 1964, Justice Paul completed his schooling at Pandit L.S. Jha Model Higher Secondary School and earned his graduation, post-graduation, and LL.B. from Rani Durgavati University in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
He began his legal career when he was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1990, practicing in various branches of law, including civil, constitutional, industrial, and service law, across different courts.
Justice Paul was elevated to judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 27, 2011 and became a permanent judge on April 14, 2014. Following his transfer to the Telangana High Court, he took oath as a judge on March 26, 2024, at his request due to his son's practice in the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
In January 2025, he was named Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. Subsequently, on May 26, 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his transfer to the Calcutta High Court, and he was appointed there on July 18, 2025.
On September 15, 2025, the former Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, retired, leading to Justice Soumen Sen being appointed as the Acting Chief Justice. However, it was evident that Justice Sen's tenure in this capacity would be temporary as the Collegium had recommended him for the Chief Justice position of the Meghalaya High Court. Recently, Justice Sen was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court following the Centre's notification based on the apex court's recommendations.
