Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 8 (NationPress) In a significant step aimed at reinstating the integrity of the Travancore Devasom Board (TDB) and tackling the controversy linked to the supposed Sabarimala gold smuggling case, the Pinarayi Vijayan government has appointed former Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar to lead the temple administration body.
This decision comes as the High Court-appointed SIT probes cases relating to the theft and illicit sale of gold plating from the Sabarimala temple, allegedly facilitated by former senior officials.
“The Devaswom Minister (V.N. Vasavan) has communicated my appointment,” stated Jayakumar.
He perceives the role not as a challenge but rather as “a significant opportunity.”
“My main focus will be to guarantee a seamless pilgrimage season. The headquarters of the Travancore Devaswom Board is not Sabarimala, but due to the emerging issues, there are various concerns from the public. It’s crucial to reassure everyone that everything is under control and to protect the faith of the devotees. I must also honor the trust the government has placed in me,” said the former Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar IAS, shortly after his appointment as the new President of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB).
A seasoned administrator and cultural personality, Jayakumar has long been regarded with bipartisan respect, having served in vital positions under both the Left and UDF governments.
Even post-retirement, he remains influential, including his role as Director of the Institute of Management in Government, the state’s leading training institute for civil servants.
Jayakumar’s extensive knowledge of Sabarimala affairs is anticipated to assist him in navigating the current challenges. He has previously held significant roles related to the temple’s management and was involved in the high-powered committee overseeing pilgrimage operations.
The 73-year-old retired bureaucrat, who is the son of renowned filmmaker M. Krishnan Nair, is also a celebrated poet, lyricist, and screenwriter.
After his retirement as Chief Secretary in 2012, Jayakumar became the first Vice-Chancellor of Malayalam University during the tenure of the Oommen Chandy government.
This appointment signifies a departure from convention, as top positions within the Devaswom Board are usually held by political figures.
This move indicates the government’s intention to restore administrative depth and public confidence in the Board at a pivotal moment, with the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season rapidly approaching.
