Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 10 (NationPress) The police in Khammam, Telangana, apprehended K Kavitha, the president of Telangana Jagruti, on Tuesday. She has been on an indefinite hunger strike since Monday night, advocating for justice for families displaced from a land parcel in the area.
Despite being forcibly relocated to Hyderabad, she has continued her protest at the Telangana Jagruthi office.
Kavitha emphasized that she will maintain her fast until justice is granted to the affected families.
She accused the authorities of forcibly evicting several impoverished families from the Velugumatla region in Khammam without any prior notice.
She explained that the land from which these families were ousted was part of a 'Bhoodan'—a land donation made by others in the past.
Highlighting that this is not government land, she questioned the actions of local officials. The former MP announced her intent to communicate with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the issue. If required, she mentioned they might approach the High Court.
Kavitha demanded that the District Collector provide assurances that the ousted families will receive 'pattas' for the same land.
Upon her arrival in Khammam on Monday, she organized a dharna with local leaders at the ZP Center. She also visited the affected families in Velugumatla and expressed that their pain and suffering were profoundly disturbing.
Furthermore, she insisted that the government should construct new homes for the victims at the same site where their previous houses were demolished.
She noted that the demolitions occurred during a critical time when children were preparing for their Intermediate and Class 10 examinations.
Police detained Kavitha, along with BC SC ST JAC chairman Visharadhan Maharaj and several Jagriti activists, transferring them to Khammam Three Town police.
After being released, Kavitha and others commenced an indefinite fast at Ambedkar Bhavan, demanding justice for the victims.
"My indefinite hunger strike will continue until the displaced families of Velugumatla are allocated plots and provided fully constructed homes at the very locations from which they were unjustly evicted," she shared on 'X'.
