New Delhi, Sep 6 (NationPress) In a significant security lapse at the historic Red Fort complex in Delhi, a golden, jewel-encrusted Kalash (sacred vessel) valued at nearly Rs 1 crore was taken during a Jain religious gathering.
This ceremonial Kalash, crafted from approximately 760 grams of gold and embellished with around 150 grams of diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, was reportedly utilized for daily prayers by prominent businessman Sudhir Jain, who transported it to the venue each day.
The theft transpired earlier this week amidst the religious festivities occurring inside the Red Fort.
Notably, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attended the ceremony known as 'Daslakshan Mahaparv' at the historic site as a special guest.
According to police accounts, the theft occurred amid the bustling welcome arrangements for the dignitary. When the ceremonial events resumed, the Kalash was discovered missing from the stage.
The Delhi Police have managed to recover CCTV footage from multiple cameras, capturing the suspect's movements. Police confirmed that the footage shows the accused carrying a black bag. Authorities believe they have identified the suspect and expect a breakthrough in the case soon, with dedicated teams formed to apprehend the individual, and an arrest likely in the coming days.
The ongoing Jain religious event, which commenced recently, is set to continue at the Red Fort until September 9. This unfortunate incident has once again brought to light serious concerns regarding the security measures at the iconic monument, which is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a significant venue where the Prime Minister hoists the Tricolour on Independence Day.
This isn't the first instance of reported security breaches at the Red Fort. Previously, seven personnel from the Delhi Police, including Constables and Head Constables, faced suspension for failing to detect a dummy bomb placed during a pre-Independence Day security drill.
In anticipation of the August 15 celebrations, authorities had intensified security across Delhi, conducting multiple drills to ensure safety at sensitive sites.
The recent theft has sparked demands for even stricter security protocols within the Red Fort premises, especially during large public gatherings and religious events.
