Patna, Jan 21 (NationPress) Criminal activities are on the rise in Bihar, with thieves increasingly targeting high-value commercial establishments in bustling urban locales.
In a bold act, criminals made off with jewelry valued at approximately ₹26.9 lakh from a shop situated in the upscale New Market area of Katihar, evading night police patrols.
The police reported that the theft occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. The thieves breached the lock of Verma Jewelers and absconded with nearly 8 kilograms of silver, 16 grams of gold ornaments, and 3.7 grams of pure gold.
The cumulative worth of the stolen items is estimated at around ₹26.9 lakh.
The criminals didn’t stop there; they also targeted Gaurav Vastralaya, a clothing store next to the jewelry shop, forcing open the main gate lock and executing another theft.
The incident was discovered Wednesday morning when local shopkeepers spotted the damaged shutters. A wave of panic swept through the market, prompting immediate notification to the police.
A team from the Town police station arrived promptly and initiated an investigation.
Confirming the incident, Katihar Superintendent of Police (SP) Shikhar Choudhary stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established under the guidance of SDPO Sadar-1.
The district police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity. This significant theft in one of the city’s supposed safest areas has heightened security concerns.
In response, SP Choudhary confirmed the immediate suspension of two police officers assigned to night patrols.
“They were supposed to be on duty but were absent from the area and neglected to inform the Town Police Station SHO about their absence. They have been suspended on grounds of negligence,” he stated.
The owner of the affected jewelry store, Shivam Kumar Verm, expressed concern that such a theft could occur in one of the busiest commercial zones in Katihar.
In light of this incident, local business owners and residents are demanding a thorough investigation, the apprehension of the culprits, and increased night patrols to deter similar crimes in the future.
