Patna, May 7 (NationPress) In a shocking daylight heist, a group of eight armed robbers invaded a Bank of Maharashtra branch in the Kashipur area of Samastipur on Wednesday, making off with jewellery valued at Rs 4.5 crore and Rs 15 lakh in cash, according to an official statement.
This bank, located in one of the city’s most bustling regions, witnessed the audacious crime unfold in full view of the public, leaving locals in disbelief.
Superintendent of Police Ashok Mishra reported that the robbery was orchestrated by a gang of eight, with three members pretending to be customers wishing to open accounts. Shortly after, five more individuals entered the premises, taking both bank employees and customers hostage at gunpoint.
The robbers confined the employees and customers into a single room, pried open the lockers, and seized the jewellery.
“The thieves made off with valuables from the bank counters and the lockers. They also confiscated mobile phones from staff and customers to hinder any alarms or communication efforts,” Mishra stated.
Surprisingly, the crime occurred without drawing attention from the busy commercial establishments located beneath the bank until law enforcement arrived.
The gang escaped on motorcycles, and there was no immediate alarm raised.
Senior police personnel, including ASP Sanjay Pandey, quickly arrived at the scene.
A manhunt is underway, and all entry and exit points in the district are currently sealed. The police are examining CCTV footage from both inside and outside the bank and tracking the license plates of the motorcycles used by the robbers.
“We are optimistic about apprehending the culprits shortly,” Mishra added.
Incidents of bank and jewellery shop robberies have surged in Bihar over recent months. On March 10, six armed robbers targeted a Tanishq jewellery showroom in Arrah, making off with valuables worth around Rs 25 crore.
Another significant robbery occurred at the Jiva Jewellery showroom in Patna's Danapur locality on January 31 of this year.
