Kozhikode, June 13 (NationPress) A suspect, who managed to escape for two days after stealing Rs 40 lakh from bank employees, was apprehended near this area by a contingent of Keralan law enforcement on Friday.
The individual has been identified as Shibin Lal.
Although Lal is currently in police custody, the stolen funds have yet to be recovered.
This incident transpired on Wednesday, when Lal approached the local branch of ESAF Bank expressing a desire to re-pawn his gold jewelry, which was secured at a nearby cooperative bank.
According to bank regulations, loans are provided against gold collateral, and they also accept gold loans from other financial entities.
Lal successfully persuaded the ESAF bank staff to acquire his gold pledged at a private institution in Kozhikode.
As per ESAF's protocol, when transporting cash to other banks, two staff members must accompany every Rs 10 lakh.
Consequently, eight ESAF officials arrived at the private financial institution with Rs 40 lakh.
Lal instructed that only two officials should enter the office, and as they proceeded inside, he swiftly seized the bag containing the cash and fled on his motorcycle.
Law enforcement was promptly alerted, and a search for Lal commenced.
The following day, the rented motorcycle used in the heist was discovered abandoned.
On Thursday, local police summoned all ESAF bank officials who had accompanied the money for questioning.
After detaining Lal, police began interrogating him, anticipating the recovery of the stolen funds.
It is expected that later in the day, Lal will be presented before a local court.
