Jabalpur, Aug 11 (NationPress) In a shocking daylight heist that has rattled the cultural heart of Madhya Pradesh, a group of armed robbers successfully stole gold and cash valued at over Rs 10 crore from ESAF Small Finance Bank located in the Khitola area of Jabalpur on Monday.
The audacious robbery, which took place in less than 20 minutes, has ignited significant concerns regarding banking security and the preparedness of law enforcement agencies, especially during the festive season.
As per police reports, the robbery transpired around 8:50 am—well ahead of the bank’s regular opening time of 10:30 am. In light of Raksha Bandhan, the branch opened earlier to manage increased customer traffic, particularly for loans secured by gold.
The gang, consisting of five to six individuals, approached on two motorcycles, donning helmets and face masks. One of the robbers was notably seen with a pistol concealed in his waistband.
Upon entering the premises, the gang threatened six bank employees, coercing them to hand over approximately 15 kg of pledged gold and Rs 5 lakh in cash. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, as the staff complied without any resistance. The robbers made their escape by 9:08 am, riding off on motorcycles in an unknown direction.
Police officials, including DIG Atul Singh and SP Sampat Upadhyay, arrived shortly after receiving the alert—though it is worth noting that the bank staff delayed notifying authorities for nearly 45 minutes.
Investigators are currently analyzing CCTV footage from the bank and its vicinity, and have enlisted fingerprint experts and a dog squad to assist in the investigation. All neighboring districts are now on high alert. Early assessments estimate the total value of the stolen gold at 15 kg, amounting to Rs 14 crore, along with the Rs 5 lakh in cash.
The lack of a security guard during the incident has sparked criticism, particularly given the bank’s responsibility for managing high-value gold collateral. Authorities are also exploring whether the robbers had prior knowledge of the bank's festive schedule and operational weaknesses.
As the manhunt intensifies, law enforcement remains tight-lipped about potential leads. “Multiple teams have been deployed. We are optimistic that the suspects will be captured soon,” stated CSP Sihora Aditya Singh.
