Kangana Ranaut flags anti-national conspiracies amid CJP protest at Jantar Mantar
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut on Saturday, 10 October alleged that 'anti-national and terrorist elements' have emerged as a grave concern for India, linking her remarks to a protest organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The agitation was called against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) and also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
What Ranaut Said
Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, Ranaut alleged that forces opposed to India's interests, in tandem with what she described as international conspiracies, were attempting to disrupt the country's normal functioning. 'Anti-national elements, terrorist forces, and international conspiracies have become a serious concern for our country at this time. Various conspiracies are being hatched to cause inconvenience to the country and its citizens under one pretext or another,' she said.
Invoking religious sentiment, she added: 'As long as Lord Ram and Hanuman's blessings are with us, no one can do anything wrong to us. The people of the country are with us. You can see how many people are trying to expose the anti-national elements. Now, not only the police, but the people will also start beating them up. Every other day, they try to stop the country from functioning normally.'
Ranaut on the INDIA Bloc's Presidential Meeting
The BJP MP also responded to the INDIA bloc delegation's meeting with President Droupadi Murmu, acknowledging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had every right to seek an audience with the head of state. However, she drew a pointed analogy to dismiss the Opposition's concerns over the electoral process. 'It's Rahul Gandhi's right to meet the President. However, this used to happen in schools too; when our classmates used to fail, they would say they had been given a different and difficult question paper. Some used to say teachers held a grudge against them and that was why they failed. From bypolls to student elections, the BJP is winning everywhere, and that is why Rahul Gandhi is troubled,' she said.
Context: The CJP Protest and Electoral Roll Revision
The protest at Jantar Mantar centred on the ECI's ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, a process that has drawn criticism from sections of the Opposition who argue it could lead to voter disenfranchisement. The demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar's resignation signals deepening distrust between the Opposition and the poll body. This comes amid a broader pattern of Opposition-government friction over electoral processes ahead of scheduled state elections.
Political Significance
Ranaut's remarks, while characteristically sharp, reflect a wider BJP narrative that frames Opposition-led agitations as destabilising rather than democratic. Critics argue such language risks conflating legitimate political protest with anti-national activity — a charge the Opposition has consistently denied. The BJP's confidence, as articulated by Ranaut, rests on its recent electoral run, which she cited as evidence of public endorsement. How the government and the ECI respond to the CJP's demands around voter roll revision is likely to shape the next phase of this political confrontation.
