Vijayendra Critiques Karnataka Government's Budget Priorities
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 12 (NationPress) BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra on Thursday expressed strong criticism towards the Karnataka government's State Budget for 2026-27, claiming that the administration's primary success has been in increasing debt rather than achieving meaningful development for the state.
During the Assembly debate on the State Budget, Vijayendra highlighted that while the government asserts its commitment to development, the actual budget allocations do not indicate significant advancements.
He mentioned that the Water Resources Department received an allocation of Rs 22,190 crore in 2025-26, which has risen to Rs 22,430 crore for 2026-27.
“This increment is merely nominal,” he stated.
He further elaborated that from the total allocation, approximately Rs 8,500 crore is earmarked for salaries and around Rs 4,400 crore for interest payments. Consequently, only Rs 9,290 crore remains available for capital investments aimed at developmental activities.
Vijayendra pointed out that several projects initiated during the previous BJP administration, which are currently 70 to 80 percent complete, require nearly Rs 90,000 crore to reach completion. A delay in funding could escalate the project costs to around Rs 1.25 lakh crore, he cautioned.
Despite these challenges, the current capital allocation is limited to only Rs 9,290 crore, raising concerns about the feasibility of completing these initiatives.
Additionally, he noted a significant rise in the state's revenue expenditure, which has increased from Rs 2,15,584 crore in 2022-23 to Rs 3,38,007 crore in 2026-27. The government, he argued, is engaging in extensive borrowing without effectively utilizing the funds for developmental purposes.
Vijayendra also criticized the government for its appointments at the Cabinet level, stating that despite having around 139 MLAs in the ruling party, numerous individuals are being granted Cabinet-level positions.
He claimed that Cabinet rank has been extended to state and district chairpersons of the government’s guarantee schemes.
In total, approximately 144 individuals have been awarded Cabinet status, resulting in a monthly cost of about Rs 3 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh for office facilities, salaries, and personal assistants for each appointee.
