Karnataka to launch KPTCL-GTD digital platform for power sector transparency
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Karnataka government is moving to implement an integrated KPTCL-GTD (Generation, Transmission and Distribution) digital platform that will consolidate the state's power sector transactions onto a single centralised system, Energy and Tourism Minister K.J. George announced on Sunday, 1 November 2026. The initiative aims to make power transactions more transparent, accurate, accountable and faster across the entire electricity value chain — from generation to distribution.
What the Platform Will Integrate
The proposed digital system will bring together key entities including power generation companies, the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), electricity supply companies (ESCOMs), and other related agencies under one unified platform. Currently, critical processes such as power purchase and sale, billing, energy reconciliation, banking, open access and financial settlement are handled separately, with manual procedures involved at multiple stages.
Under the new platform, these processes will be fully automated and integrated, significantly reducing human intervention. Advanced dashboard-based systems will allow all stakeholders to monitor power transactions, billing, energy reconciliation and financial settlements in real time.
Key Technical Features
The platform will include an Energy Reconciliation system to accurately track electricity generated, transmitted and consumed, along with billing and settlement status. Integration of the Meter Reading Interface (MRI) will allow data to be sourced directly from meters, with 15-minute block-level data and interface point information also linked to the system — reducing dependence on manual entry.
Digital signatures and digital approval mechanisms will be introduced for bills and related documents to cut down on paper-based processes. The system will also connect with central government portals, including the PRAAPTI Portal and NOAR Portal, to ensure smoother data flow across organisations.
What the Government Says
'Several institutions and stages are involved in the power sector, from generation to distribution. Our objective is to integrate key processes that have so far been carried out separately and manually onto a single digital platform using advanced technology,' Minister George said. 'This will make transactions more transparent, faster and smoother for all stakeholders, including power generators, buyers, transmission agencies and distribution companies,' he added.
George also stressed that technology adoption should go beyond mere digitisation — it must improve departmental efficiency, reduce losses, strengthen financial management and enhance revenue collection.
Implementation Status
KPTCL Managing Director V. Ram Prasat Manohar has initiated the necessary steps to implement the KPTCL-GTD project following the minister's directions. Efforts are currently underway to progressively integrate data from various organisations, including billing systems, energy reconciliation, digital approvals and financial settlement processes.
Once fully operational, the platform is expected to reduce billing discrepancies, delays in account reconciliation and data inconsistencies — ultimately speeding up financial settlements and improving the overall efficiency of Karnataka's power sector. All eyes will now be on the rollout timeline and whether integration with ESCOMs across the state proceeds without friction.
