Karnataka Sets Ambitious Goal of 25,000 MW Renewable Energy in Five Years
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 18 (NationPress) Karnataka is setting its sights on boosting renewable energy output to 25,000 MW within the next five years. This ambitious target is supported by proactive policies, as stated by Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Gaurav Gupta on Wednesday.
At an event hosted by the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (KREDL) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), Gupta introduced a book titled How Can India Make Its Renewable Future a Responsible One. He emphasized that achieving this goal is feasible “with the collaboration of investors and the community.”
Gupta acknowledged the challenges surrounding land acquisition for renewable energy initiatives. He noted, “Residents are worried about the effects on their livelihoods, which investors perceive as a barrier. It’s essential to educate the public on the importance of renewable energy for national progress.”
He also mentioned that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Energy Minister K.J. George, and Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda have streamlined land acquisition procedures and established a dedicated online portal for investors and farmers to facilitate land conversion. This allows for investor-farmer discussions and online registration, paving the way for renewable energy projects to commence.
Gupta highlighted the transformative role of KREDL over the last thirty years in establishing Karnataka as a frontrunner in India's renewable energy sector. Currently, the state boasts over 23 GW of installed renewable capacity, predominantly driven by solar and wind energy.
The Pavagada Solar Park, which exceeds 2,000 MW in capacity, stands as one of the largest solar parks globally and exemplifies inclusive development by providing farmers with long-term land leasing options.
Karnataka has also emerged as a national powerhouse in wind energy, achieving over 8,238 MW of installed capacity, Gupta reported.
During the event, KREDL Chairman and MLA T.D. Rajegowda commended the government's initiatives, including the Chief Minister’s Solar Agriculture Scheme.
“Karnataka has consistently led in renewable energy and has received numerous national accolades. The Chief Minister’s Solar Agriculture Scheme, which integrates agriculture with renewable energy, is an exceptional initiative,” he remarked.
The discussions at the event covered various facets of renewable energy and were attended by key figures including K.P. Rudrappaiah, Managing Director of KREDL, Karthik Ganesan, Director at CEEW, and other senior officials and industry stakeholders.
