Vijayapura, Feb 19 (NationPress) Karnataka Police have taken action by arresting five final-year MBBS students involved in the alleged ragging of a first-year student from Kashmir, police sources reported on Wednesday.

The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Vijayapura Rural Police Station in North Karnataka.

The suspects have been identified as Mohammad Kaisar (23), Samir Tadapatri (24), Mansoor Basha (24), Shiekh Dawood (23), and Mohammad Jamadar (23).

They are facing charges under Sections 155(2), 329(4), 352, 351(2), 189(2), 191(2), and 190 of the BNS Act.

According to police reports, the incident transpired at Al Ameen Medical College and Hospital, situated on Athani Road on the outskirts of Vijayapura city, on Tuesday, February 18. The alleged ragging reportedly ensued from a dispute between senior and junior students during a cricket match.

Later that evening, the accused allegedly entered the hostel room of Hameem, a first-year student from Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir. They purportedly coerced him into performing dances and singing for their amusement, threatening him with the fact that he had four more years at the college.

The victim subsequently shared posts on social media, tagging the Prime Minister, the Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir and Karnataka, along with Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

Upon receiving this information, Vijayapura Rural Police quickly arrived at the college to conduct inquiries, gathering statements from the medical superintendent, principal, and students.

“One of them demanded that I salute, while others forced me to sing and dance. When I declined, they assaulted me. Juniors have to endure such challenges. Nevertheless, I have not filed an official complaint with the police,” Hameem expressed.

However, the college administration, including the Dean, Principal, and Medical Superintendent Dr. Jilani A. Awati, refuted any claims of ragging.

“There was an altercation during the cricket match, but we have initiated a preliminary investigation. Action will be taken against anyone found culpable. Our institution has a history of 40 years, and we do not accept such behavior. Hameem has not sustained any injuries, and we have communicated with his parents. The police are carrying out their investigation. Our disciplinary committee is overseeing the situation, and we will implement necessary actions. All students are treated equally within our campus,” Awati stated.

The investigation is ongoing, with further updates expected.
