Has the Karnataka Government Rejected CBI Inquiry for Ballari Violence?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 8 (NationPress) In response to the BJP's request for a central agency investigation into the recent violence in Ballari that claimed the life of a Congress worker, the Karnataka government announced on Thursday that the Cabinet has resolved to refrain from transferring such cases to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Karnataka's Home Minister, G. Parameshwara, asserted that the Karnataka Police possesses the requisite capabilities to thoroughly investigate the Ballari violence incident that led to the shooting death of a Congress worker. He emphasized that there is no necessity for a CBI inquiry into this matter.
“Our police are equipped to manage any scenario. Should a situation arise where the police are unable to conduct an investigation, we will then contemplate handing over the case to the CBI. Nonetheless, the Cabinet has previously decided against transferring any such cases to the CBI,” Parameshwara stated.
He further remarked that decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis. “When there is a court directive or any other urgent reason, we will act accordingly. We have reached a conclusion in this matter, and at present, there is no need to hand over the case,” he added.
In the meantime, the Karnataka Police has issued notices to over 30 Congress workers in relation to the violence that erupted following the installation of a banner in front of BJP MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy's residence, culminating in the shooting of a Congress worker named Rajashekar in Ballari city. To date, police have arrested 26 individuals from both BJP and Congress.
The Brucepet police, responsible for this case, have issued notices to a total of 107 individuals, with several reportedly evading arrest out of fear.
Police sources have indicated that they are preparing to issue notices to Congress MLA Nara Bharat Reddy, BJP's Janardhana Reddy, and former minister B. Sriramulu concerning this incident.
The Karnataka government recently appointed a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Superintendent of Police (SP) for Ballari, a region that has gained national attention due to the banner-related violence resulting in a shootout.
The government transferred Ballari Division Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vartika Katiyar and appointed IGP P.S. Harsha in her stead.
Shortly after taking charge, Sumana Pannekar was appointed as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Ballari, replacing Pavan Nejjur, who was suspended on the very day he assumed office following the Ballari violence.
Meanwhile, Janardhana Reddy and his associate, former minister B. Sriramulu, have claimed that the government pressured Rajashekar's family to cremate his body instead of permitting a burial, in what they allege is an attempt to suppress the case.
Conversely, the camp of Congress MLA Nara Bharat Reddy released a photograph purportedly showing a gunman firing from the roof of BJP MLA Janardhana Reddy’s residence. It has been alleged that gunfire also originated from Janardhana Reddy’s side, prompting Congress to demand an investigation into the actions of the government gunman. In light of this, the Ballari police have initiated an inquiry into the photograph that has been disclosed.
