Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday, 17 September 2026 announced a sweeping package of development initiatives for the Kalyan Karnataka region at the Kalyan Karnataka Utsav in Kalaburagi, headlined by a two-year anti-anaemia campaign targeting pregnant women, adolescents and lactating mothers. The announcements, made during Kalyan Karnataka Liberation Day celebrations, span healthcare, industry, agriculture, infrastructure, technology, tourism and sports.

The Anti-Anaemia Campaign

The Karnataka government will launch a dedicated two-year screening, prevention and treatment programme to reduce anaemia prevalence across the Kalyan Karnataka region. Special focus will be placed on pregnant women, adolescents and lactating mothers — groups identified as disproportionately vulnerable. The campaign reflects a broader public health push in a region that has historically lagged behind other parts of Karnataka on key nutritional indicators.

Industry, Agriculture and Economy

To accelerate industrial growth, the government will establish the Kalyan Karnataka Economy Mission (KKEM) as a Section 8 company, mandated to attract large-scale investments and create new economic opportunities. A separate Bio Economy Mission will focus on increasing farmers' incomes through processing and value addition of regional agricultural produce, including tur dal, Kamalapur bananas, raisins and millets.

An IT Park on 30 acres in Kalaburagi is also planned to extend technology sector growth beyond Bengaluru, accompanied by the launch of KRIYA — Kalaburagi Research, Innovation and Youth Accelerator — to nurture start-ups and young entrepreneurs.

Infrastructure and Urban Development

For Kalaburagi city, the government announced a flyover on the Sedam Road Ring Road to ease traffic congestion, with a new peripheral ring road also under planning — the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared. A new lake and recreational park will be developed at a cost of ₹30 crore, and 50,000 housing sites will be developed for site-less families in the district. An AI-based CCTV network will be installed across Kalaburagi city and taluk headquarters for public safety, crime prevention, traffic management and monitoring of civic services including waste management.

Heritage, Sports and Environment

A pilgrimage and heritage circuit will connect Kalaburagi Fort, Sharanabasaveshwara Temple, Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah, Buddha Vihara, Malkhed, Sannati and Ganagapur. Ganagapur will be developed in the first phase at a cost of ₹50 crore, with heritage sites at Malkhed, Nagavi, Kalagi and Sannati redeveloped through Kalyan Karnataka Regional Development Board funds. A Vachana Mantapa will be established in Kalaburagi to propagate the teachings of Basavanna and the vachana tradition.

On sports, Chandrashekhar Patil Stadium will be comprehensively redeveloped, and a new Sports City with international-standard indoor and outdoor facilities will be established at Hadgil Haruti village in Kalaburagi taluk. The government will also sign an agreement with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to develop cricket facilities across the region.

The government additionally committed to the Koti Vruksha Abhiyan — a drive to plant and nurture one crore saplings across Kalyan Karnataka over two years to boost green cover and climate resilience.

Shivakumar described Kalyan Karnataka as the 'Shakti Peetha' of Karnataka, stressing that development must translate into tangible quality-of-life improvements for the people of the region. All eyes will now be on the timelines and funding allocations for this ambitious multi-sector package.
