Srinagar, Nov 27 (NationPress) - Two talented artisans from Kashmir have been honored with the prestigious National Award for excellence in handicrafts, as revealed by the Union Textile Ministry on Thursday.
A representative from the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom in Jammu and Kashmir stated: "Manzoor Ahmad Khan hailing from the Rainawari area of Srinagar and Khwaja Nazir Ali from Alamgiri Bazar, Srinagar, will receive the National Award for their outstanding skills in hand-knotted carpet weaving and sozni embroidery from the President of India during a ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on December 9."
The spokesperson expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Textiles for this recognition and congratulated the two master artisans for elevating the reputation of Kashmiri handicrafts, renowned globally for their intricate patterns and vibrant colors.
“We are delighted by their achievements that significantly contribute to the advancement of crafts like sozni and carpet weaving,” he remarked.
Each award carries a citation along with a monetary reward of Rs 2 lakh.
“In addition to the winners, two additional artisans - Mashkoora Hameed from Budgam for sozni embroidery and Mir Arshad Hussain from Srinagar in papier-mache - have been recognized with special mentions and are invited to the ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan,” the spokesperson mentioned.
Manzoor Ahmad Khan, a distinguished hand-knotted carpet weaver, was recently awarded first place in the UT Awards 2024 at SKICC on Tuesday.
"He also took part in the inaugural edition of Know Your Artisan at the Jhelum Riverfront and will actively participate in the Guru-Shishya Hastashilp Prashikshan programme for Kupwara, organized by the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, Srinagar,” the spokesperson added.
Khwaja Nazir Ali has also made a name for himself in the realm of sozni embroidery, a recognition that has earned him the esteemed National Award. Mussarat Islam, Director of Handicrafts and Handloom in Kashmir, commended the awardees, stating that this recognition will enhance the visibility of Kashmiri handicrafts and help penetrate newer niche markets, particularly in South-East Asia.
The Department will soon hold an event to celebrate the awardees and those who received special mentions from the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, as mentioned by the director.
