Thiruvananthapuram, May 6 (NationPress) The president of Kerala's BJP, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, expressed strong disapproval on Tuesday regarding the midnight arrest of journalist Shajan Skaria by state authorities, labeling it a clear breach of established democratic principles.
Chandrasekhar, a former Union Minister, stated: "Skaria was taken into custody while dining at his residence on Monday night, and shockingly, he was not even permitted to don a shirt. This incident highlights the intolerance of the CPI-M-led Left government."
Importantly, Skaria has been vocal about various allegations against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his administration.
This incident marks yet another occasion where Skaria has faced scrutiny from law enforcement, which he claims operates under the influence of CM Vijayan's office.
On that Monday night, while enjoying dinner with his elderly parents, police arrived at his home following a complaint from a woman related to supposed defamation and arrested him.
His arrest was documented. Following this, he was taken for a medical evaluation from the police facility.
Skaria was subsequently brought before a local magistrate's residence.
During the proceedings, Skaria's legal representative highlighted that his detention and arrest violated standard protocols and argued that custodial questioning was unnecessary, as he has consistently adhered to the law.
The magistrate later granted bail to the journalist.
Skaria asserted that he has been targeted for consistently exposing CM Vijayan's misdeeds, particularly concerning recent allegations against his daughter.
Chandrasekhar criticized the state governments within the INDIA bloc for adopting what he described as undemocratic behaviors, even while they advocate for press freedom.
"The BJP will relentlessly oppose this undemocratic and autocratic mode of governance, and it is not exclusively Skaria who is affected; the BJP will stand against injustice for all Keralites," remarked Chandrasekhar.
Over time, Skaria has garnered significant attention through his online presence and YouTube news channel.
