Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 10 (NationPress) As Kerala approaches the local body elections, senior leaders from the Congress party stated on Monday that these elections will act as a referendum against the over nine-year rule of the Pinarayi Vijayan government, which they accuse of corruption, mismanagement, and undermining public trust.
The Kerala local body elections are scheduled to occur in two stages on December 9 and 11, with vote counting slated for December 13.
AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan, and KPCC President Sunny Joseph expressed confidence that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will achieve a significant victory, indicating that the public is prepared to deliver a decisive verdict against both the State and Central governments’ “anti-people” policies.
Speaking to the media in Cherthala, Venugopal remarked that the Sabarimala gold theft has severely affected the faithful, which is likely to be reflected in the electoral results.

“It is the LDF, not the UDF, that has forged alliances with the BJP,” he added, suggesting the outcome of the local elections will foreshadow the UDF’s success in the Assembly elections. Satheesan, addressing the media in Ernakulam, stated that the UDF is entering the elections as a cohesive and organized unit.
“Team UDF has advanced in seat-sharing, candidate selection, and campaign planning. This election is not merely about local body control but about holding the government accountable for its shortcomings,” he remarked.
Satheesan accused the Kerala economy of being “on the brink of collapse,” citing an empty treasury, excessive borrowing, and the highest inflation rate in India.
“Supplyco has over Rs 2,200 crore in dues and cannot intervene in the market. The public is suffering while the government remains indifferent,” he stated.
KPCC President Sunny Joseph asserted that the local elections will showcase public discontent towards both the State and Central governments.
“Perceiving impending defeat, the LDF has hastily made empty promises after years of inaction. If they are genuine, they should implement their welfare commitments retroactively. The government’s promotional efforts and events won’t deceive anyone,” he said.
He also accused the LDF of manipulating ward delimitation and voter registrations.
“The government has strangled local bodies by slashing funding and hindering development. The public will respond appropriately through their votes,” Joseph concluded.
