Nilambur, June 9 (NationPress) The Forest Minister of Kerala, A.K. Saseendran, has retracted his earlier controversial comments insinuating a political conspiracy regarding the electrocution of a 15-year-old boy, Ananthu, also known as Jithu, in the vicinity of Nilambur.
This incident, which took place on Saturday evening, has ignited public outrage and heightened political tensions in light of the forthcoming by-election in the Nilambur Assembly constituency.
On Sunday, Saseendran’s suggestive remarks raised eyebrows as he hinted at foul play, asserting that the illegal electric fence that resulted in the boy's death seemed to have been installed suspiciously later that day.
His statements were broadly interpreted as implying that the trap was part of a deliberate effort to influence the upcoming by-election.
However, facing increasing backlash, the Minister amended his statement on Monday. “I never claimed there was a conspiracy. I merely expressed skepticism. Both the CPI(M) state secretary and the LDF convenor made similar remarks,” he clarified.
The tragic incident occurred in a village administered by a Congress-led local body on Saturday. This area is currently gearing up for a by-election set for June 19, following the resignation of LDF-supported independent legislator P.V. Anvar in January due to differences with the Chief Minister.
Congress leader and UDF convenor Adoor Prakash accused the LDF of attempting to politicize the tragedy.
“This isn’t the first occasion Saseendran has backtracked. They are anxious about the political atmosphere in Nilambur,” Prakash stated, who is presently in the constituency.
“Ironically, it was the Left that initially suggested a conspiracy, alleging that a Congressman orchestrated the trap. We demand a comprehensive investigation to reveal the truth.”
The boy, a Class 10 student, was reportedly heading to a stream with friends when he came into contact with a live wire connected to an unauthorized wild boar trap. He died instantly, while two others were injured. The trap was reportedly powered by a direct electricity connection, lacking proper authorization.
The incident sparked widespread protests, particularly following Saseendran’s initial comments. On Sunday, UDF supporters took to the streets, denouncing what they termed as insensitive and politically charged statements from the Minister.
