The Kerala Police have launched an intensive statewide manhunt for fugitive gangster Arjun Ayanki after he openly defied the force and the state government through a series of provocative social media posts, daring officers to come and arrest him. Who Is Arjun Ayanki

Ayanki is a former functionary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), who allegedly reinvented himself as a key operator in Kerala's gold-smuggling and quotation mafia. He is an accused in multiple high-profile cases, including investigations linked to the 2021 Ramanattukara gold smuggling case. Once known as a prominent CPI(M)-aligned cyber activist, his trajectory into organised crime has drawn sustained police attention.

The Defiance That Triggered the Crackdown

Ayanki's current fugitive status follows the Kerala High Court's rejection of his anticipatory bail plea in a Kothamangalam criminal case. Rather than surrender, he turned to Instagram and Facebook to mock law enforcement, question officers' ability to detain him, and allegedly issue threats against investigating personnel. His most recent posts reportedly targeted Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, prompting the government to direct senior police officials to secure his arrest without delay. Police are also preparing fresh criminal cases over alleged intimidation of public servants and attempts to undermine law enforcement through social media.

How the Hunt Is Being Conducted

Special Investigation Teams (SITs), backed by shadow police units and cyber experts, have launched coordinated searches across Kochi, Kothamangalam, and Kannur. Surveillance has been extended to neighbouring states, including Maharashtra, amid suspicions that Ayanki may have fled Kerala with assistance from an organised criminal network. Investigators are examining whether Ayanki himself is operating the social media accounts or whether associates are posting on his behalf to mislead the police. His digital communications, IP addresses, mobile tower data, financial transactions, UPI accounts, and suspected benami dealings are all under active scrutiny. Those allegedly providing shelter, funds, or logistical support are also likely to face prosecution.

Background: The Kothamangalam Resort Detention

The confrontation traces back to a 3 May operation in which Ayanki and nine associates were detained at a luxury resort in Kothamangalam, with police alleging the group was planning a major crime. Though he subsequently obtained bail, investigators sought its cancellation after he allegedly threatened the investigating officer and continued posting provocative content online.
