Thiruvananthapuram, July 5 (NationPress) Following requests from 16 pro-CPI-M syndicate members of Kerala University, in-charge Vice-Chancellor Cisa Thomas approved a special syndicate meeting scheduled for Sunday. The syndicate is made up of 24 members.
This meeting comes shortly after Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mohanan Kunnummel suspended Registrar Dr. K.S. Anil Kumar for allegedly canceling a private event attended by Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar at the Senate Hall, where a portrait of Bharat Mata with a saffron flag was displayed.
After this incident, Kunnummel traveled abroad and delegated his responsibilities to Thomas, who is currently the Vice-Chancellor at the Kerala University of Digital Sciences.
In response to his suspension, Kumar approached the High Court for an interim stay, arguing that the decision was inconsistent with university regulations.
Interestingly, this situation arose as the Kerala High Court questioned Kumar about how Bharat Mata could be seen as a religious symbol and why displaying the portrait would pose a law and order risk.
The court denied his request for an interim stay, further probing: "How could Bharat Mata be considered a religious symbol? What was the contentious image, and what potential law and order issues could arise from its display in Kerala?"
State Higher Education Minister R. Bindhu, who also serves as the Pro-Chancellor of Kerala University, condemned the VC's actions, stating they were against university protocols.
R.S. Sasikumar, a specialist in university matters, informed IANS that with the issue now before the court, the special syndicate meeting would likely not lead to any resolutions. Furthermore, final orders from the High Court are anticipated on Monday, leaving everyone awaiting the outcome.
