Is a Kerala Headmistress Facing Humiliation at School Gates?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kollam (Kerala), Feb 5 (NationPress) The Kerala State Women’s Commission has recently taken suo motu cognisance of an incident involving a headmistress who was barred from entering a school in Kottarakkara, Kollam district, due to her choice of wearing a churidar.
Commission Chairperson P. Sathidevi stated that this action is a clear violation of women’s dignity and has instructed the Kottarakkara District Educational Officer to provide an immediate report.
The controversy arose when Sindhu, the headmistress of Neduvathur Eeswaravilasam Higher Secondary School, was allegedly refused entry to her workplace for not wearing a sari.
This incident took place on Tuesday morning as Sindhu reported for duty, only to be halted at the school gate by a security personnel.
According to her, the guard informed her that the school management had directed him to deny her access based on her attire.
In response, Sindhu staged a protest at the gate, refusing to leave while students and teachers looked on.
Eventually, police were summoned to the scene and intervened, allowing her to enter the school premises.
Following her complaint, the Kottarakkara police have filed a case against the security personnel, Shashankan.
The FIR indicates that stopping the headmistress constitutes an act that undermines her dignity.
Sindhu has claimed that the guard acted under explicit instructions from the school manager, labeling the incident as an abuse of authority.
“There is no government mandate that requires women teachers to wear saris. I have experienced continuous harassment that has made it challenging for me to perform my duties,” Sindhu stated, expressing that she felt humiliated in front of her students and colleagues.
She vowed to pursue her legal battle until justice is served.
However, the school management has countered these allegations, asserting that teachers are free to dress as they choose and denying that any instruction was issued to restrict the headmistress's access based on her clothing.
This incident has ignited a broader discussion regarding workplace dignity and gender norms within educational institutions.
Advocates for women’s rights and educators are emphasizing that dress codes should not be enforced arbitrarily or used to intimidate, particularly against women in leadership roles.
