Bengaluru, Feb 24 (NationPress) AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday voiced his support for the Indian Youth Congress' shirtless demonstration at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi, asserting that the protest was conducted in the nation's best interest.
He condemned the arrest of Youth Congress members during the demonstrations at the summit, labeling the actions as undemocratic and unjustifiable.
While addressing the press in Bengaluru, Kharge emphasized that the protest was aimed at spotlighting critical issues like unemployment and the plight of farmers.
"Our youth members associated with the AICC Youth Congress have been detained and placed in police and judicial custody due to their protests at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi. I strongly condemn this. These demonstrations were executed with careful thought and aimed at the nation's welfare; they should not be categorized as serious crimes," Kharge stated.
He expressed that the protest sought to bring attention to unemployment rates and the alleged injustices faced by farmers. Kharge also criticized the central government for its international agreements, claiming these decisions have negatively impacted farmers.
"They protested against unemployment and the unfair treatment of farmers. The government's agreements with US President Donald Trump have placed an additional burden on our farmers. These policies will harm agricultural workers, and the protest was organized to raise awareness of these pressing issues," he remarked.
Kharge raised alarms over the arrests and the denial of bail to Youth Congress members, stating that such actions undermine democratic values.
In response to concerns that the protest tarnished India's reputation during an international gathering, Kharge pointed out that protests during significant events are not uncommon.
"The BJP claims that the country’s image was compromised due to protests at an international event. However, during the Commonwealth Games, senior leaders, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and other BJP figures, also protested," he noted.
Kharge contended that the Youth Congress protest aimed to draw attention to important issues but is now being subjected to negative propaganda.
He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of making decisions without considering the country’s welfare, stating, "The Prime Minister is complying with every demand from Donald Trump without considering the implications for India."
Kharge criticized decisions such as halting oil imports from Russia and yielding to US demands, which he believes could have detrimental effects on the nation and its agricultural sector.
Last Friday, a group of IYC activists staged a protest within Hall No. 5 of the summit venue, removing their shirts to reveal T-shirts inscribed with slogans against the government and the India-US interim trade agreement before being escorted out by security.
The police reported that the accused had registered online to obtain QR codes for venue access.
