Gulmarg, February 23 (NationPress) Preparations were finalized on Monday for the grand opening of the 6th Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) at this stunningly beautiful, snow-covered ski destination in Jammu and Kashmir.
This exciting four-day event will be inaugurated by J&K's Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, who will witness the participation of 400 athletes hailing from 30 states and union territories.
Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, shared with IANS, “We have 400 registered athletes from 30 states and union territories. With favorable snow conditions this year, we are optimistic about the event's success.”
The KIWG will run from February 23 to 26. The initial stage of the KIWG took place in Leh, Ladakh, from January 20 to 26.
This is the second installment of the games focused on snow sports, and all six editions of the KIWG have occurred in J&K and Ladakh.
Gulmarg will showcase four competitive disciplines, namely ski mountaineering, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing (cross country), and snowboarding. The highest number of entries has been recorded in alpine skiing.
During the conclusion of KIWG 2026 in Ladakh-Leh, Haryana topped the medal standings, claiming four gold medals through its figure and ice skaters. Following Haryana were Ladakh, Maharashtra, and Telangana.
The KIWG mascot, 'Sheen-E-She (Shan)', symbolizes the Snow Leopard and embodies the essence of Indian winter sports—resilient, agile, and adaptable—bringing the legacy of the Himalayas to the national forefront through the Khelo India Winter Games.
Special arrangements have been set in place for the event, with senior officials from civil administration and security meticulously reviewing the preparations.
Kashmir is also preparing to welcome the Vice President of India, C.P. Radhakrishnan, on February 26, who will be the chief guest at the 21st convocation of Kashmir University on that day.
