Chandigarh, Jan 31 (NationPress) The Kila Raipur Rural Olympics 2025, recognized as one of Punjab’s leading sports festivals, commenced on Friday with the inauguration by Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond at the Kila Raipur stadium.
During his speech, Sond highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting sports. He stated, “Our government is actively working to create a sports-friendly atmosphere, aiming to revive Punjab's former sports prestige.” Sond revealed that a substantial fund of Rs 75 lakh has been allocated for the organization of these games, which will greatly aid local athletes and the sports community.
He expressed hope that this event will significantly impact the development of a vibrant sports culture, helping to discover talent from all parts of the state. Furthermore, he shared that the government has increased financial rewards for athletes winning medals at the Olympics and other international events.
The annual event, ‘Kheda Watan Punjab Diyan’, has seen tremendous enthusiasm from the youth.
The minister also announced plans to reinstate bullock cart races during the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics, noting their popularity as a major attraction. He mentioned that a notification regarding this is under consideration, and he has sought the Chief Minister’s backing for the initiative.
Sond urged sports fans to attend the stadium to experience this remarkable event. He reiterated that the rural Olympics serve as a platform for children, youngsters, and seniors to exhibit their talents across various sports disciplines. He commended the district administration, under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal, for ensuring proper arrangements for the event and its participants.
The inaugural day showcased competitors of all ages in 10 different activities, including men’s and women’s hockey matches, kabbadi for girls under 14 and under 17, sprint races of 60 m and 100 m for boys and girls, 1,500 m races for both genders, as well as kho-kho matches, volleyball for men, shooting contests, and other traditional rural games.
